Toenail fungus is the discoloration of the nails caused by a fungal infection. Fungus on toenails live on the keratins under the nails resulting in discoloration and flakes on the toenails. There are so many factors that could bring about toenail fungus. Most people who are already infected tend to self medicate themselves, and are not aware that they should use preventive measures to be able to avoid further infection.
Some of the symptoms may include flakes and discoloration on toenails. You can also experience pain when wearing shoes and walking. In some cases you may smell a foul odor coming from the infected toenails. Discoloration is also one of the symptoms of this nail disorder; your toenails may become brown, yellow or even green.
What causes toenail fungus? One of the reasons why fungus appears on toenails is because of cutting the nail too short. There are times that unintentional small cuts are made when trimming your nails, this can lead fungus to appear and live on your nails causing an infection. The best way to trim your nails is to not cut them really short.
Another cause could be regular exposure of your toes to moisture, this happens when you have sweaty toes. The best way to deal with this is to always wear moisture absorbing socks and to change them regularly once they are wet. If you often go swimming, always bring flip flops with you and wear them, this will help a lot in preventing toenail fungus.
Some treatments that are being used to cure toenail fungus are Listerine mouthwash, and tea tree oil. In using Listerine mouthwash, you just have to immerse your infected toes in Listerine for 30 minutes. This should be done for three days. Tea tree oil can help a lot too; this is an extract of a natural plant that contains helpful substance which can kill fungus.
